Colon Adenocarcinoma

Colon Cancer

Pathology of colon cancer as seen through the eyes of a histologist.  How many different ways are there to visualize cancer?  The more the better!

Hematoxylin & Eosin (our recipe)

HMGB1 Antibody – According to the The Human Protein Atlas HMGB1 protein plays a role in several cellular processes, including inflammation, cell differentiation and tumor cell migration.

CD8 Antibody in the Human Protein Atlas ( CD8A) describes it as a cell surface glycoprotein found on most cytotoxic T lymphocytes that mediates efficient cell-cell interactions within the immune system.

Indoleamine Antibody – This enzyme is thought to play a role in a variety of pathophysiological processes such as antimicrobial and antitumor defense, neuropathology, immunoregulation, and antioxidant activity (IDO1).

Perforin Antibody – This protein is one of the main cytolytic proteins of cytolytic granules, and it is known to be a key effector molecule for T-cell- and natural killer-cell-mediated cytolysis (Perforin).

Melanin or Melanoma?

Human skin (melanoma?) H&E

Melanoma, a heightened subject that should be talked about with, everyone?  How do you tell the difference between melanin and melanoma?  Research facilities are currently exploring this topic and it’s treatment.  But we do know the primary cause, too much UV rays.  The pathologist can see the difference between melanin and melanoma an H&E stained section, can you?.  Here are some examples.

For the rest of us, melanoma is better detected by antibody staining (IHC).  There are a few different antibodies, MART1, Melan, HMB but all I have is Granzyme B.

What do you think?

NPR News Covers New Policy of University Of California on Measles

NPR covers the story of the new required policy starting 2017 for all new students attending the University of California.  This gives a microscope picture of measles stained with H&E.  This is a truly rare event where histopathology is highlighted using a micrograph.

This is a great article to draw attention to histology and how diseases like this are diagnosed.

Hematoxylin & Eosin Staining

microscopic bone marrow stained with H&E

As you can see by our pictures the routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain is a most popular choice for research, clinical, and vet pathologists.  Before immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF), pathologists would rely solely on routine and special staining for their tissue diagnosis.

Can you diagnosis the correct answer below?
